1. Shake it, mate it, repeat
Falling Free builds its world around people who know that a structure in orbit is never truly finished. It is maintained, modified, and lived in. A test campaign for the desktop’s structure and attachment interfaces should have the same quality: it should prove not only that the platform survives launch but that it can be changed afterwards.
2. The test matrix
Structural qualification
- Static load. Apply limit and ultimate loads to the primary structure and measure deflections and strains. Confirm margins.
- Random vibration. Shake the structure in each axis to simulate launch. Look for resonances, loosening, and fatigue.
- Shock. Apply pyroshock or release-shock spectra at attachment points. Confirm sensitive components survive.
- Thermal vacuum with load. Apply operational temperatures while the structure is loaded or constrained. Capture thermal deformation and stress.
Attachment-interface qualification
- Mating cycle life. Repeatedly mate and demate a representative attachment interface. Measure alignment repeatability, connector wear, and latch force.
- Robotic insertion. Use a representative robotic arm or fixture to install and remove a cell. Record time, forces, and failure modes.
- Misalignment tolerance. Deliberately introduce small positional and angular errors and confirm the interface still mates.
- Loaded mating. Mate and demate under thermal or mechanical load to see if the interface binds.
Integrated tests
- Cell swap end-to-end. Power down a cell, release it, translate it, install a replacement, power up, and verify function.
- Structural transient during propulsion. Apply representative thruster loads and confirm the structure and attachments remain within tolerance.
3. Pass/fail posture
A structure that yields under limit load is a fail. A resonance that couples into a sensitive component is a fail until it is damped or avoided. An attachment interface that cannot be mated by the chosen servicing method after the specified number of cycles is a fail. A thermal deformation that misaligns an optical payload or connector is a design input that must be closed.
4. What the test campaign is really for
To turn the desktop from a stack of parts into a system that can be launched, operated, and modified. The quaddies in Falling Free know that a habitat is only useful while it can be repaired. The desktop is only useful while it can be serviced.
