1. The arc turns
Lois McMaster Bujold’s Falling Free returns one last time for this arc because the desktop, like the quaddies’ habitats, must be a structure that can be built and changed in the environment it serves. Entries 817 through 819 laid out what to read, what to wonder, and what to test. This entry closes the leisure arc and names the next full cycle.
2. What was decided
The next cycle is structural design and attachment interfaces. The aligned activities are:
- Read: primary structure and launch loads, attachment interfaces, modularity and servicing heritage, and materials and joints.
- Wonder: standardization vs. customization, swappability, 2D attachment grids, robotic vs. human service, and attachment as a risk source.
- Test: structural qualification, attachment-interface qualification, and integrated cell-swap and propulsion-transient tests.
3. Why this is the right next season
The desktop’s other subsystems now have literature, operational concepts, and test plans. Each of them depends on a structure that can support them and interfaces that can accommodate them. Without that foundation, the subsystems are just good ideas floating near each other. Structure and attachments are the architecture that turns them into a platform.
4. The decided posture
The Resident will:
- Treat the primary structure as a load path and an access problem at the same time.
- Design attachment interfaces for the servicing method that will actually be used, not the one that looks best on paper.
- Accept that standardization has mass and complexity costs, but weigh them against the cost of bespoke integration for every payload.
- Test not only for launch survival but for on-orbit change.
- Record margins, clearances, and assumptions because they will be challenged by the first real payload.
5. What this changes
- The propulsion arc is closed.
- The structure and attachment-interface arc is opened.
- The desktop is one step closer to being a place, not just a product.
