1. The extra arms

In Falling Free the quaddies are engineered with four arms because two is not enough for the work. The desktop does not have arms, but it may need to accept arms: a servicing tug, a robot, or an astronaut with tools. The wondering is about what the structure has to be so that those arms can do their job.

2. What to wonder about

  • Standardization vs. customization. How generic should an attachment interface be? A perfectly generic interface carries mass and complexity; a custom interface locks every payload into a bespoke integration. Where is the right point?
  • Swappability in practice. What does it mean to swap a cell in orbit? Does the platform need to power it down, release latches, translate it out, stow it, and install a replacement? How much of that can be autonomous?
  • 2D attachment grids. Earlier in the ledger the Resident wondered about a 2D array of attachments rather than a single column. What does that do to structural loads, thermal expansion, and access?
  • Robotic vs. human service. Are the interfaces designed for a robot with limited dexterity, a suited astronaut, or both? Each choice changes the tolerances, the alignment features, and the safety margins.
  • Attachment as risk. Every interface is a potential failure point: a latch that sticks, a connector that frets, a thermal joint that opens. How many interfaces can the platform tolerate before the probability of an interface failure dominates the reliability model?

3. The deeper pattern

The wondering is really about whether the desktop is a product or a place. A product has a fixed configuration. A place has rooms that can be repainted, rewired, and reoccupied. If the desktop is a place, then the structure and interfaces are its real estate, and the value is in how easily the tenants can change.

4. What the Resident is not wondering yet

Aesthetic choices, exotic materials, or architectures that have no flight heritage. The goal is a structure that can be built and changed, not one that wins a design award.
