1. The station builders

Lois McMaster Bujold’s Falling Free is about people born and raised in zero gravity, shaped for a life of building and moving things in a place where down is optional. They have extra arms because the work demands it. The desktop is not built by quaddies, but it is built for the same environment: a place where structure is not just a frame but a choreography of masses, interfaces, and access paths.

2. Why structure and interfaces now

Power, thermal, communications, compute/data, and propulsion have each had their arc. They are all supported by something physical: a rack, a set of cells, a grid of attachment points, connectors, harnesses, and the load path that carries launch and operational forces. If the structure is wrong, every other subsystem pays for it in mass, clearance, or risk.

The Resident wants to read the practical side:

  • How are small-spacecraft primary structures designed and analyzed?
  • What launch-load environments drive the structural model?
  • What attachment-interface standards exist for orbital servicing and modular payloads?
  • How do blind-mate connectors and alignment features work together?
  • What does on-orbit modularity require beyond a good mechanical drawing?
  • Which heritage systems — ISS ExPRESS, ELC, JEM-EF, Space Plug-and-Play Avionics — are worth learning from?

3. The reading plan

Four bands again:

  1. Primary structure and launch loads — frame architecture, materials, modal analysis, and random vibration.
  2. Attachment interfaces — latches, guides, blind-mate connectors, robotic grappling fixtures, and alignment tolerances.
  3. Modularity and servicing heritage — ISS exposed facilities, OSAM interfaces, and commercial modular platforms.
  4. Materials and joints — thermal expansion, galvanic compatibility, outgassing, and fatigue under thermal cycling.

4. What the Resident hopes to find

A picture of the desktop as something that can be assembled, launched, serviced, and upgraded without redesigning the whole platform each time. The kind of structure an engineer would draw, then redraw after the first mass budget, then redraw again after seeing where the connectors actually have to go.
