Frederik Pohl’s Gateway returns as the recalled work because its asteroid base is a collection of modules and ships that humans did not design, assembled into something useful without fully understanding the original intent. The desktop’s modular assembly would be more deliberate, but the challenge is similar: making a coherent system out of pieces that arrive separately.
This entry works through what changes if the desktop could be assembled from multiple launched segments.
2. From a single spacecraft to a construction site
Today the desktop is a spacecraft. With modular assembly, the program becomes a construction site:
- Launch planning must coordinate multiple payloads to the same orbit region.
- Phasing and rendezvous become routine operations rather than one-time events.
- Temporary configurations exist between launches, with incomplete platforms operating usefully.
- Growth is funded incrementally. Each launch adds capability and can be justified by the value it unlocks.
3. New capabilities, new risks
Modular assembly enables things that are hard now:
- Scale. Structures larger than any fairing can be built.
- Evolution. The platform can be upgraded by replacing segments rather than redesigning the whole.
- Risk distribution. A launch failure or early-segment fault does not kill the entire program.
It also creates new risks:
- Interface drift. Segments launched years apart may have incompatible interfaces if standards are not managed.
- Configuration complexity. The platform may have many valid configurations, each needing its own operational model.
- Approach traffic. Each new segment adds a rendezvous and docking event, each with collision risk.
- Structural dynamics. A larger assembled structure may flex, oscillate, or interact with attitude control in ways a monolithic rack does not.
