2. The current assumption

So far the desktop has been imagined as a rack launched as one unit. Cells can be swapped, and segments can be split off, but the total platform size is bounded by the launch vehicle fairing. Modular assembly breaks that assumption. The desktop could be launched in pieces and assembled in orbit, or it could grow over time by adding new segments.

3. Why assemble in orbit

Orbital assembly changes several constraints:

  • Fairing limits disappear. Long booms, large apertures, or wide radiator arrays can be built from pieces.
  • Mass can be distributed across launches. A heavy platform can be lifted in smaller, cheaper chunks.
  • Growth becomes incremental. New segments are added as funding, customers, or technology allow.
  • Redundancy improves. A failure during launch only loses one segment, not the whole platform.

4. What would be assembled

The desktop could grow in several directions:

  • More cells for compute, storage, and power.
  • Larger radiators or solar arrays attached as separate segments.
  • Antenna or sensor booms built from truss segments.
  • Robotic servicing arms or manufacturing modules added as specialized segments.
  • Docking ports that allow external spacecraft to connect and use platform services.
