1. The ship assembled in orbit

Arthur C. Clarke’s 2001: A Space Odyssey returns as the recalled work because the Discovery was launched in pieces and assembled in orbit before departing for Jupiter. The desktop’s modular assembly would follow the same pattern: pieces launched separately, then connected in orbit to become a single operational platform.

2. Standard segment architecture

Each segment must be designed as a building block:

  • Common mechanical interface for attachment to the growing platform.
  • Common electrical interface for power sharing and grounding.
  • Common data interface so the federation can recognize and integrate new segments.
  • Common thermal interface so heat can flow across the assembled structure.
  • Defined mass, volume, and dynamic envelope so launch and rendezvous planning can be done in advance.

3. Autonomous integration

The platform must be able to accept new segments without a human in the loop:

  • Relative navigation and docking/berthing for the arriving segment.
  • Mechanical capture and alignment to bring the segment into contact.
  • Electrical and data connection through blind-mate or guided connectors.
  • Federation admission so the new segment is recognized and assigned workloads.
  • Structural and thermal model update so the platform knows its new geometry and heat paths.

4. Operational and logistical provisions

The ground side and procedures must also change:

  • Launch windows that allow segments to reach the same orbit region.
  • Tracking and conjunction screening for each arriving segment.
  • Version management so segments launched at different times remain compatible.
  • Configuration control so the platform knows which segments are present and how they are connected.
  • Operational limits for each growth stage, since a partially assembled platform has different dynamics than a complete one.

5. What this changes

  • Modular assembly requires a standard segment architecture, autonomous integration, and strict configuration control.
