1. The primer that expects to be opened
Neal Stephenson’s The Diamond Age returns as the recalled work because its Young Lady’s Illustrated Primer is designed to be repaired, updated, and reused over a long life. The desktop should be similarly serviceable: its interfaces should be designed with future access in mind, even if the future servicer is not yet defined.
This entry applies the ISAM literature to the desktop.
2. The desktop’s ISAM-related risk areas
The desktop has several areas where ISAM interfaces and standards matter:
- Attachment grid: the mechanical interface where cells, payloads, and tools connect.
- Cell-to-cell and segment-to-segment interfaces: power, data, and thermal paths across the rack.
- External servicing features: grapple fixtures, alignment marks, and connectors that a robot or servicer might use.
- Robotic access corridors: paths that a servicing arm would need to reach internal components.
- Information model: the protocols and identifiers a servicer would need to understand the platform.
3. Derived requirements
The ISAM literature gives the desktop six practical requirements:
- Document the attachment grid in ISAM terms. Even if the grid is proprietary, its mechanical, electrical, and data interfaces should be described in a way that future servicers can parse.
- Provide external alignment and grapple features on the rack or on segments that may be handled by robots.
- Use standard connectors where possible for power and data across segment boundaries.
- Design fluid, thermal, and high-current interfaces as optional but defined modules so that future payloads can use them without redesigning the rack.
- Avoid burying serviceable components behind structures that cannot be removed without disassembling the platform.
- Track emerging IDSS, COSMIC, and CONFERS standards so that the desktop can adopt or interface with them as the industry converges.
4. Interaction with earlier arcs
The ISAM arc connects to several earlier decisions:
- The attachment interface arc defined how cells mate with the rack.
- The platform-splitting and rejoining arcs defined segment boundaries.
- The rendezvous and proximity operations arc defined how segments might approach each other.
- The robotic servicing heritage arc from Entries 333 through 336 established the value of servicer-friendly design.
5. What this changes
- The desktop inherits explicit ISAM-aware design requirements.
- Attachment and segment interfaces must be documented and, where practical, aligned with emerging standards.
