2. The International Docking System Standard

The International Docking System Standard (IDSS) is the closest thing the space industry has to a universal docking port. It is androgynous, low-impact, and supports autonomous or manual docking. The IDSS Interface Definition Document defines the mechanical, electrical, and data interfaces that an IDSS-compatible vehicle must implement.

NASA’s implementation of IDSS is the NASA Docking System (NDS). The NDS Users Guide provides integration information for host vehicles and describes the soft-capture and hard-capture mechanisms, power and data transfer, and operational concepts. NDS is used by the Commercial Crew Program and Orion.

3. Berthing and robotic servicing interfaces

Not every connection is a docking. Berthing uses a manipulator to position a spacecraft before latching. NASA’s Client Berthing System was developed for OSAM-1 to rigidly attach a client spacecraft to a servicer after robotic grapple.

For robotic servicing, tools and couplers matter. The Hypergol Refueling Tool and Quick Disconnect System is a NASA technology for transferring hypergolic propellants on orbit. Fluid Transfer Couplers, gripper tools, and tool drives are part of the OSAM-1 heritage licensed to industry.

4. Servicer-friendly design

A spacecraft can be designed to be serviced even if no specific servicer exists yet. This means:

  • Providing visible, accessible grapple features.
  • Including alignment aids and cooperative markers.
  • Designing fluid, power, and data interfaces that match emerging standards.
  • Avoiding buried or non-redundant components that cannot be reached.
  • Documenting the interface so that future servicers can plan without reverse engineering.
