1. The equation that does not care

Tom Godwin’s The Cold Equations is a short story about a spacecraft whose mass budget is absolute. The ship has exactly enough fuel for exactly the mass it was designed to carry. The universe does not make exceptions. The desktop’s thermal design is similar: it must reject exactly the heat it generates, or it will overheat. A test that ignores the thermal environment is a test that ignores the cold equation.

2. The test queue

After the off-nominal alignment test, the next tests in rough order are:

  • Thermal-vacuum test: interface behavior under thermal cycling in vacuum.
  • Vibration and shock test: survival of the rack and cell assembly under launch loads.
  • Power distribution test: multi-cell power bus with switching and fault handling.
  • Network reconfiguration test: weak federation behavior when cells appear and disappear.

3. The chosen next test

It asks whether the mechanical, thermal, electrical, and data interfaces survive repeated temperature swings in a vacuum.

The test should start with a nominal insertion, since the off-nominal alignment test has already covered misalignment at room temperature. If resources allow, a small set of off-nominal cases can be repeated in the chamber, but the primary goal is to validate thermal behavior.

The thermal-vacuum test is the next logical step because:

  • It exposes failure modes that room-temperature tests cannot.
  • It provides data needed for the thermal model.
