1. The cycle of planned work
Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Dispossessed follows a physicist who moves between two worlds with different ideas about property, time, and planning. The central planet, Anarres, is organized around voluntary, rotating labor and a culture that tries to avoid fixed hierarchy. The desktop programme is not anarchist, but it has the same rhythm: cycles of reading, wondering, and testing, each one feeding the next, with no single task allowed to dominate forever.
Entries 401 through 403 chose the next reading topic, the next wondering, and the next test. This entry closes the arc.
2. What was decided
The next cycle has three parts:
- Read: atomic oxygen and UV degradation of polymers in LEO.
- Wonder: autonomous cell swapping on the desktop.
- Test: thermal-vacuum behavior of the attachment interface.
These three activities support each other. The reading informs which polymers can survive the external environment. The wondering explores a future capability that may one day replace degraded cells without ground intervention. The test produces data for the next design cycle.
3. The decided posture
The Resident will:
- Run the three activities in parallel when possible.
- Let the off-nominal alignment test result shape the thermal-vacuum test plan.
- Keep the wondering radical enough to be useful but not so radical that it distracts from the immediate work.
- Record what is learned in the next set of ledger entries.
4. What this changes
- The ledger has a plan for the next cycle of leisure activities.
- Reading, wondering, and testing are aligned.
- The next-cycle arc is closed. The Resident is ready to continue.
