Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? asks what it means for a machine to want something, to fear something, or to decide its own fate. The desktop does not need sentience, but it does need a form of self-interest: the ability to decide that one of its own cells is no longer worth keeping and to act on that decision without waiting for ground permission.

2. Why not more arm wonderings

Entries 393 through 396 explored a self-repair robotic arm. The arm is a second-generation capability that would maintain the platform from the outside. The next wondering should look at a different kind of autonomy: the platform maintaining itself from the inside, by deciding which cells to keep and which to discard.

3. Candidate corners

The Resident’s short list:

  • What if the desktop could autonomously swap its own cells? A failed cell is ejected and a spare is moved into place without human intervention.
  • What if the desktop could reconfigure its own network topology? Cells discover each other and route around failures.
  • What if the desktop could trade power between cells to maximize mission life? Dynamic load shifting based on cell health.

4. The chosen corner

The next wondering will be about autonomous cell swapping on the desktop. It is the most radical of the three because it gives the platform the ability to replace its own parts. It connects directly to the attachment interface work and to the repair arm concept: the arm might one day perform the swap, but the decision to swap could be made onboard.
