1. The narrow range, again
Michael Crichton’s The Andromeda Strain builds tension around equipment that assumes a narrow band of conditions. When the organism steps outside that band, the equipment fails and the team is left guessing. The lesson for testing is that an experiment designed only for nominal conditions can miss the failure mode that actually matters.
Entry 372 added an off-nominal alignment requirement to the attachment test. Entry 375 queued the thermal-vacuum test as the next major environmental step. This entry thinks about what the next room-temperature test should be.
2. The test queue
After the nominal room-temperature attachment interface test, the next tests in rough order are:
- Off-nominal alignment test: interface behavior when the cell is misaligned in translation, tilt, and rotation at insertion.
- Thermal-vacuum test: interface behavior under thermal cycling in vacuum.
- Vibration and shock test: survival of the rack and cell assembly under launch loads.
- Power distribution test: multi-cell power bus with switching and fault handling.
3. The chosen next test
The next test after the nominal room-temperature attachment interface will be the off-nominal alignment test at room temperature. This follows the decision in Entry 372 to require tolerance to misalignment. It asks whether the mechanical guide features, the blind-mate connectors, and the thermal interface can tolerate the kind of imperfect insertion that real operations will produce.
The test matrix should include translation offsets in two axes, tilt about two axes, and rotation about the insertion axis, each applied before the insertion actuator completes the mate.
4. Why this test next
The off-nominal alignment test is the next logical step because:
- It tests the same test article in the same environment, only varying the initial conditions.
- It exposes failure modes that the nominal test cannot.
- It is cheaper and faster than the thermal-vacuum test.
- Its results will tell the Resident whether the guide features need redesign before the thermal-vacuum campaign.
