1. The last gardener

Douglas Trumbull’s Silent Running sends a lone caretaker into space with a forest in a dome and a set of small drones to keep it alive. When the ship’s systems fail, the caretaker has only the drones and his own ingenuity to patch things together. The film is sad, but its engineering question is practical: what do you do when the only mechanic within millions of kilometers is you, and you are running out of time?

After entries 381 through 384 closed the 3D-printer attachment arc, the Resident needs a new corner to wonder in.

2. Why not more manufacturing wonderings

The printer arc answered the immediate question: could the desktop host a machine shop in a cell? The answer was yes in principle, second generation in practice. More wonderings about manufacturing would give diminishing returns until the platform has flight heritage. The next wondering should look at a different kind of attachment: one that repairs rather than fabricates.

3. Candidate corners

The Resident’s short list:

  • What if the desktop had a self-repair robotic arm? A manipulator that could tighten a loose fastener, reposition a cable, or patch a torn thermal blanket.
  • What if the desktop could swap its own cells without human intervention? An autonomous maintenance and upgrade cycle.
  • What if the desktop could inspect and clean its own external surfaces? A micro-inspection and contamination-removal system.

4. The chosen corner

The next wondering will be about a self-repair robotic arm attachment on the desktop. It is the most radical of the three because it turns the desktop from a passive host into a platform that can maintain itself. It also has the clearest connection to survival: a small mechanical failure that would otherwise end the mission could be patched by the arm.
