Vernor Vinge’s A Deepness in the Sky follows a trading fleet that plans in centuries. The traders preserve technology, language, and social structures across voyages so long that the planets they left behind have forgotten them. The book’s engineering lesson is that some systems must be maintained by people who did not design them, using tools and knowledge kept deliberately stable. The desktop is not interstellar, but it has the same shape: a platform that must keep working when the operator who launched it is no longer the operator who maintains it.

2. What was decided

The next cycle has three parts:
