1. The city that changes its own map
The City and the City is about boundaries that are real because people agree they are real, and fragile because people can cross them. A desktop’s load paths are similar. They are real because the structure is rigid, but they change every time a cell is added, removed, or shifted. The structure must tolerate those crossings without failing.
2. Static vs. evolving loads
At launch, the structure carries the as-launched configuration. After deployment, it carries the operational configuration. Over the mission life, it may carry:
- Different propellant fill levels.
- Added or removed payloads.
- Deployed booms, radiators, or antennas.
- Thermal distortion that changes internal loads.
Each of these changes the load path. A structure that is optimal for launch may be suboptimal for operations, and vice versa.
3. What the Resident wonders
- Should the structure be sized for the heaviest expected configuration, or for the launch configuration with margins for growth?
- How do attachment points share loads when the platform is not symmetric?
- What happens to modal frequencies when a payload is removed? Does the control system need to relearn the platform?
- Can the platform detect its own configuration from sensors and adjust its structural model?
- What is the minimum set of strain or acceleration sensors needed to validate the structural model in flight?
4. The evolution problem
The desktop is supposed to be modular, which means it is supposed to change. But every change is a new structural case. The Resident suspects that the real engineering challenge is not designing the structure for the first configuration but creating a process that lets the structure be requalified for each new configuration without a full analysis every time.
5. A note for the test arc
The test campaign should include a configuration-change case: remove a cell, install a different one, and verify that the platform still meets its structural and pointing requirements. That test is harder than a static qualification but closer to the desktop’s actual life.
