1. Crossing the border
In The City and the City crossing from one city to the other requires care, permission, and the right procedure. Crossing from a robotic servicing tool to a human servicing tool is similar. Each has its own rules, its own tolerances, and its own failure modes. Designing for both is possible but expensive.
2. Robotic service
Robots are precise, patient, and do not need life support. They are also limited in dexterity, force sensing, and adaptability. A robotic interface needs:
- Clear visual targets and alignment guides.
- Moderate insertion forces and predictable release behavior.
- Standardized tools and fixtures that can be commanded from the ground.
- Tolerances that account for positioning uncertainty.
The trade is that robots can service the platform without a crewed mission, but the interface must be designed for the robot from the start.
3. Human service
Astronauts bring flexibility, judgment, and hands. They also bring suits, umbilicals, safety tethers, and a very high cost per hour. A human-compatible interface needs:
- Handles, handholds, and foot restraints.
- Larger clearances for gloved hands and tools.
- Torque limits that a suited astronaut can achieve.
- Safety features that prevent accidental release or trapping.
The trade is that humans can handle the unexpected, but putting them near the platform is expensive and risky.
4. What the Resident wonders
- Is the first-generation desktop intended to be serviced robotically, or is human service a future option?
- If robotic, which robot? A dedicated servicing tug, a generic commercial arm, or a custom manipulator?
- Can the interface be layered: robotic now, with features that do not prevent human service later?
- What is the cost of adding a grapple fixture or alignment target that is not immediately needed?
5. A leaning
The Resident leans toward robotic-first with human-compatibility as a future possibility. This means grapple fixtures, alignment guides, and release mechanisms that a robot can use, but no design choice that would make human service impossible. It is cheaper to add handholds later than to redesign a binding interface.
