Frank Herbert’s Dune returns as the recalled work because the Fremen do not simply travel across Arrakis; they test every piece of equipment against the desert before trusting it. A stillsuit that leaks in the sietch is still a suit; a stillsuit that leaks in the deep desert is a coffin. The desktop’s thermal hardware must be tested the same way: not at room temperature with friendly air, but in vacuum, under eclipse, with the Sun at one angle and deep space at another.

2. Why a thermal test comes next

The power test arc verified that the desktop can manage electrical energy through realistic orbital cycles. The thermal test arc must verify that the platform can manage heat through the same cycles. A thermal model can be wrong in ways that only appear when the hardware is cold-soaked, Sun-baked, or suddenly switched from one to the other.

The test must answer:

  • Do the predicted temperatures match the measured temperatures in vacuum?
  • Can the platform survive the longest expected eclipse without component temperatures falling below survival limits?
  • Can the platform reject the waste heat from a high-power operational mode without overheating?
  • Do heaters, heat pipes, radiators, and thermal interfaces perform as designed?
  • Does the autonomous thermal manager keep temperatures within limits without ground intervention?

3. What to test

The next test topic is thermal balance and thermal vacuum verification for the desktop. The Resident wants to test:

  • a representative thermal model correlated against a thermal vacuum chamber run;
  • eclipse survival with minimum operational power and no heaters beyond the autonomous set;
  • hot-case balance with maximum payload dissipation and worst-case Sun and albedo inputs;
  • transient response to rapid attitude changes and payload duty-cycle steps;
  • heat trading between two or more cells on a common thermal bus or network;
  • autonomous thermal protection: entering safe thermal mode when a radiator is shaded or a heat path fails;
  • recovery from cold soak: bringing batteries and electronics back to operating temperature after a long eclipse.

4. Why this test now

A thermal balance test is the natural successor to the power test because it validates the other half of the energy equation. It is also a prerequisite for claiming that the desktop can host power-dense attachments. A compute board or RF transmitter that is electrically supported but thermally unsupported is a liability, not a capability.
