2. What was learned
The adhesives literature gives the desktop three constraints:
- Adhesives in space must be low-outgassing, thermally matched, and properly cured. Standard spacecraft epoxies and silicones exist, but each application must be matched to the environment.
- Joint design matters as much as adhesive selection. Shear and compression are good; peel and cleavage are dangerous.
- Surface preparation and process control are critical. A bond is only as good as the interface it is applied to.
3. What was decided
The desktop will treat adhesives and bonded joints as controlled design properties:
- A bonding bill of materials will identify every adhesive, sealant, thermal interface material, and potting compound in the flight assembly.
- All adhesives used inside the platform or near sensitive surfaces will meet low-outgassing requirements.
- Bonded joints will be designed to minimize peel and cleavage loads.
- Surface preparation, adhesive application, and cure processes will be documented and controlled.
- Representative bonded joints will be qualified by thermal cycling, vibration, and vacuum exposure.
4. What remains open
