1. The patch that has to hold, applied

Andy Weir’s The Martian returns as the recalled work because the desktop will also rely on patches and bonds that must hold without maintenance. The Hab’s sealant and Watney’s rover modifications are fiction, but the problem is real: joints and seals must survive until someone can inspect them, and in orbit that someone may be a robot or no one at all.

This entry applies the adhesives literature to the desktop.

2. The desktop’s bonded joints

The desktop has several classes of bonded joint that need scrutiny:

  • Thermal interface bonds: between cells and heat spreaders, or between heat pipes and radiators.
  • Structural reinforcement bonds: brackets, gussets, or panel edge closures.
  • Seals: around electronics enclosures, connector panels, and thermal-vacuum barriers.
  • Potting and conformal coatings: on circuit boards and connectors for vibration and moisture protection.
  • Multi-material joints: aluminum to composite, metal to polymer, or coated surfaces to bare metal.

3. Derived requirements

The adhesives literature gives the desktop six practical requirements:

  • Use low-outgassing adhesives anywhere inside the pressure shell or near optics and sensors. The standard screen is ASTM E595.
  • Match thermal expansion coefficients between adhesive and adherends, or choose flexible adhesives that can tolerate mismatch.
  • Design joints for shear and compression, not peel or cleavage. Where peel cannot be avoided, use mechanical reinforcement.
  • Control surface preparation and cure processes. Bond strength depends on cleanliness, roughness, and cure schedule.
  • Keep bond-line thickness within the manufacturer’s recommended range.
  • Qualify representative bonded joints by thermal cycling and vibration before relying on them in flight.

4. Interaction with earlier arcs

The adhesives arc connects to several earlier decisions:

  • The galvanic arc already required isolation between dissimilar metals; adhesives can provide that isolation if they are electrically insulating and durable.
  • The connector arc selected low-outgassing connector inserts; the same outgassing screen applies to adhesives near those connectors.
  • The EMC arc requires bonding of conductive surfaces; conductive adhesives or tapes may be needed for electrical continuity.
  • The thermal control arc uses thermal interface materials, which are a specialized class of adhesive or grease.

5. What this changes

  • The desktop inherits explicit adhesive selection, joint design, and process requirements.
  • Bonded joints become controlled items with defined surface preparation, cure, and test records.
