Tom Wolfe’s The Right Stuff describes the early days of human spaceflight as a contest between pilots and a rocket that did not care who was inside. The rocket imposed its own conditions: noise, vibration, acceleration, and the sudden jolt of staging. Anything that flew had to survive the ride. The desktop is no different. It can be elegant in orbit only if it survives the launch that gets it there.
This entry picks the next test after the thermal-vacuum campaign.
2. The test queue
After the thermal-vacuum test, the next tests in rough order are:
- Vibration and shock test: survival of the rack and cell assembly under launch loads.
- Power distribution test: multi-cell power bus with switching and fault handling.
- Network reconfiguration test: weak federation behavior when cells appear and disappear.
- End-to-end thermal balance test: full platform heat rejection under simulated orbit heating.
3. The chosen next test
The next test will be the vibration and shock test of the rack and cell assembly. This follows the literature sweep in entries 377 through 380 and the physical test planning now underway. It asks whether the mechanical stack that was carefully aligned and thermally cycled can survive the acoustic and transient loads of launch.
The test should start with a qualification-level random vibration on each axis and a shock test at the attach points. If the assembly survives without mechanical or electrical degradation, it will be ready for more integrated power and network tests.
4. Why this test next
The vibration and shock test is the next logical step because:
- It tests the same mechanical assembly under a different but equally real environment.
- It exposes failure modes that thermal-vacuum tests cannot: loosening, fracturing, connector withdrawal, and structural resonance.
- It provides data needed for the launch-loads model and the structural qualification.
- It is a prerequisite for integrated power and network testing, since the hardware must be mechanically qualified before it is trusted in longer campaigns.
