Michael Crichton’s The Andromeda Strain makes its final appearance in this cycle because Entries 397 through 415 have been a sustained argument against testing only for the narrow range. Room temperature, nominal alignment, and gentle handling are not enough. The desktop must prove its attachment interface under misalignment, under thermal stress, and in vacuum.
Entries 413 through 415 defined why the thermal-vacuum test matters, what the matrix is, and what success looks like. This entry closes the arc.
2. What was decided
The next environmental qualification step for the attachment interface is the thermal-vacuum test defined in this arc. The test will:
- Run in a chamber at less than 10⁻⁵ torr.
- Cycle temperature between −100°C and +100°C for survival, −40°C to +80°C for operational mating.
- Include both nominal and off-nominal alignment cases from Entry 398.
- Require at least 20 thermal cycles with mate/demate activity.
- Measure electrical continuity, thermal resistance, insertion and extraction force, and visual condition.
3. What this test protects against
The thermal-vacuum test protects against three real risks:
- Thermal distortion surprises: parts that fit at room temperature may not fit at temperature extremes.
- Vacuum-specific degradation: cold welding, outgassing, and loss of convective cooling.
- Combined environment failure: misalignment that is harmless at room temperature may become critical when the parts are distorted.
4. Relationship to autonomous swapping
The test also supports the autonomous-swap-ready posture decided in Entry 412. A robot will not be able to feel a stiff guide pin or notice a change in insertion force the way a human can. The interface must be quantifiably tolerant across the full environmental range before it is trusted to an autonomous mechanism.
