2. Minimum success

The interface passes the thermal-vacuum test if, for every case in the matrix:

  • The cell seats fully and latches without manual intervention.
  • Electrical continuity is maintained at all connector pins.
  • Thermal interface resistance stays within the design budget.
  • Insertion and extraction forces remain within actuator limits.
  • No visible damage appears on guides, connectors, thermal pads, or coatings.

This minimum says the interface survives the environmental envelope and the off-nominal alignment cases defined for it.

3. Full success

A stronger result would add:

  • Insertion force does not increase measurably over the life-cycling portion of the test.
  • Electrical and thermal performance after 20 cycles is indistinguishable from the baseline.
  • Off-nominal mating at temperature extremes is as reliable as nominal mating at room temperature.
  • The test article is fit for additional qualification testing without rework.

This stronger result supports a claim of margin, not just survival.

4. Failure modes

The test fails if any of the following occur:

  • The cell jams or cannot reach full depth at a temperature extreme.
  • A connector pin loses continuity or shows increased resistance.
  • The thermal interface degrades beyond the design budget.
  • Insertion or extraction force exceeds the actuator limit.
  • Evidence of cold welding, galling, coating delamination, or outgassing contamination.
  • The cell seats but does not make reliable electrical or thermal contact.

Each failure mode points to a fix: different materials, different coatings, different clearances, or a different insertion profile.

5. What this changes

  • The thermal-vacuum test has clear pass and fail criteria.
