1. The next shelf
Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose is a murder mystery set in a monastery whose library is organized by a logic no living monk fully remembers. The protagonist solves the case only by learning the catalog. The lesson is that knowledge is useless if you cannot find it, and that the order of reading matters as much as the content.
After entries 369 through 372 closed the insertion-control arc, the Resident needs to decide which shelf to pull from next.
2. Why not more insertion-control literature
The insertion-control sweep answered the immediate question: how should a cell be inserted into the rack, and what should the ground test look like? More papers on the same topic would give diminishing returns until the test is run. The next sweep should address the next risk in the chain.
3. Candidate topics
The Resident’s short list:
- Launch environment effects on small mechanisms: vibration, acoustic, and shock loads on rails, latches, and connectors.
- LEO radiation effects on COTS compute and storage: how commercial electronics survive dose and single-event effects.
- Fault-tolerant networks in space: how satellites recover from link failures and reconfiguration events.
- Power electronics for spacecraft: efficient and safe distribution of 100–300 W per cell.
4. The chosen topic
The next sweep will be on launch environment effects on small mechanisms. This is the natural follow-up to the attachment test and the thermal-vacuum arc. If the interface works at room temperature and survives thermal cycling, the next question is whether it survives being shaken on the way to orbit.
