1. The long cycle of small improvements

Vernor Vinge’s A Deepness in the Sky follows traders who preserve technology across civilizational cycles. Their ships are not perfect; they are the accumulated result of many small repairs, each one tested against reality. The lesson is that reliable insertion is not designed in one step. It is designed as a series of staged corrections, each one absorbing the errors the previous one could not catch.

That is exactly what the insertion-control literature describes. Entries 369 through 371 applied it to the desktop. This entry closes the arc.

2. What was learned

The literature reinforced three principles and added one operational requirement:

  • Staged insertion: coarse alignment, guide engagement, fine insertion, seating, and retention should be separate, ordered events.
  • Passive compliance first: chamfers, tapered rails, and self-centering features should absorb the bulk of the misalignment before any sensor is needed.
  • Active compliance as backup: force-torque sensing protects against residual errors and detects jams, but it is not the primary alignment mechanism.
  • Test off-nominal alignment: a ground test that only checks perfect insertion is not a sufficient qualification test.

3. The decided posture

The Resident will:

  • Treat the rack rails and cell guides as the coarse-alignment stage of an insertion sequence.
  • Design the blind-mate connectors to engage only after the mechanical rails have seated the cell.
  • Include deliberate misalignment cases in the attachment interface test.
  • Add force or current monitoring to the test setup if practical, and document what can be inferred from position feedback if not.
  • Require a clean backoff procedure for any insertion that exceeds a force or position-error threshold.

4. What this does not solve

The literature does not specify the exact chamfer angle, the rail tolerance, or the connector engagement force. Those remain design parameters to be set by the mechanical and electrical teams. The literature only says what behavior the design must produce.

5. What this changes

  • The attachment test is no longer just “does it mate?”; it is “does it mate when things are slightly wrong?”
  • Passive alignment features are upgraded from nice-to-have to required.
  • Force monitoring is added to the test plan as a diagnostic layer.
  • The insertion-control literature arc is closed.
