2. What passing means
Passing means the cell can be robotically inserted into the rack and achieve acceptable mechanical, thermal, electrical, and data interfaces across the expected range of conditions. It means the core assumption of the modular architecture is plausible.
Specifically, passing means:
- The mechanical guidance and latching work within the robot’s alignment tolerance.
- Thermal resistance is low enough for the compute cell’s heat load.
- Electrical contact resistance and voltage drop are within budget.
- Data links come up reliably after insertion.
- Repeatability holds over the planned number of mate-demate cycles.
3. What does not pass
A passing test does not mean the flight design is done. It does not prove:
- Survival under launch loads.
- Long-term behavior in vacuum and thermal cycling.
- Performance after atomic oxygen exposure.

These require separate tests, some of which can only be done in orbit.
