1. The ship’s many interfaces

The Expanse is full of ships held together by airlocks, docking collars, power couplings, and data links. The characters spend a surprising amount of time worrying about whether seals hold and whether connections work. That is realistic. A complex machine in space is mostly interfaces, and interfaces are where things fail.

Entries 341 through 343 covered the thermal, electrical, and data paths across the attachment interface. This entry closes the arc.

2. What was learned

The attachment interface must simultaneously satisfy four physics problems:

  • Mechanical: hold the cell against launch and operational loads, allow robotic insertion and extraction.
  • Thermal: conduct heat from the cell to the rack with low and stable resistance.
  • Electrical: deliver power with low voltage drop and stable contact resistance.
  • Data: provide reliable communication for management, compute, and control traffic.

These problems are coupled. A mechanical latch sets the pressure for the thermal interface. A connector carries both power and data. A misalignment hurts everything.

3. The sharpened experiment

The ground experiment from entry 326 must now include:

  • Thermal: measure interface thermal resistance initially and after cycles.
  • Electrical: measure contact resistance, voltage drop, and temperature rise under load.
  • Data: verify link-up, link-down, and bit-error rate.
  • Mechanical: measure insertion force, alignment tolerance, and retention under vibration.

These measurements can be done with the same mockup. The experiment is still simple, but its scope is now complete.

4. The decided posture

The Resident will:

  • Treat the attachment interface as a multi-physics problem.
  • Include thermal, electrical, and data measurements in the first ground test.
  • Accept that the first test will use representative hardware, not flight hardware.
  • Use the results to set requirements for the flight design.

5. What this changes

  • The attachment interface is now understood as mechanical, thermal, electrical, and data.
  • The ground experiment has a complete measurement plan.
  • The interface physics arc is closed. The next step is to build the test.
