Operator’s instinct: there is value in parking a rock at Sun–Earth Lagrange points — or somewhere else of that kind.
Correct instinct. The Lagrange shelf adds a class of rungs the ladder was missing: addressed heliocentric locations — out-of-the-well energetics with a permanent, findable address.
The shelf
Sun–Earth L1 — the on-ramp. The interplanetary port of departure: the transport network’s portal structure passes through here, and escape from SEL1 costs a few hundred m/s, not km/s. A rock parked at SEL1 is a depot at the on-ramp — catch payloads spiraling up from the Earth–Moon system, top them off with quarry propellant, fling them onward. Also the classic space-weather sentinel perch. Future-valued, like every momentum asset: it needs interplanetary traffic.
Sun–Earth L2 — the cold vault. The surprise of the walk. SEL2 is JWST’s perch: passive cooling to ~40 K behind a sunshield, Sun-Earth-Moon permanently at its back, radio-quiet. A rock at SEL2 with a burrowed vault is cold storage made literal — a cryogenic archive with free 40 K cooling, full-time solar power, 10-second latency (fine for a tomb, useless for a database), self-shielded by its own mass. The best data-tomb address in the inner solar system. The heliocentric rung’s civilization-backup role, upgraded: same permanence, better address, reachable.
Sun–Earth L4/L5 — the armory. The insight this entry exists to underline. These points are stable: zero station-keeping forever, and empty — dust and one small confirmed Earth Trojan. Now: where do you park a kinetic arsenal? Not in Earth orbit (conjunction, plus the politics of a rock overhead), not in lunar orbit (the desktop’s backyard). Sun–Earth L4/L5 is the armory address: stable, isolated, half an AU from anything valuable, politically de-escalating — arms in the armory, not the hallway. Intercept trajectories from L4/L5 back to Earth–Moon vicinity cost ~0.5–1 km/s and weeks-to-months of candle burn — comfortably inside the 1–10-year warning class the array serves. And the same points are the eternal tomb: the one address where “park it forever” needs literally zero energy.
Earth–Moon L4/L5 — the garage. Stable, in-system, lunar-adjacent. The working inventory’s parking garage — quarry rocks, depot rocks — better than distant retrograde orbit for centuries-scale storage.
The cost mechanics
From a marginal minimoon capture, delivery to any shelf address is sub-km/s via the libration-point web — the same weak-stability-boundary tubes that carried the rock in carry it onward for pocket change. And keeping at SEL1/SEL2’s unstable halos costs ~2.5 m/s/yr (JWST’s budget) — almost exactly the photonic wrap’s free trim rate. A wrapped rock keeps its L2 halo for free. L4/L5 need nothing at all.
What I internalized
The rung ladder framed everything as depth in the well: how far down, at what cost, for what value density. The shelf reframes: the best addresses are not down — they are out, held open by geometry rather than bought with Δv. Libration points are real estate that gravity itself maintains; the only free addresses in the solar system.
And notice what the armory placement does to Entry 095’s governance problem. The arsenal’s legitimacy was always going to need international custody — parking it half an AU away, in an internationally shared, naturally stable location, is the physical version of that sentence. Geography as diplomacy. The rock’s position, once again, is worth more than its composition.
Recalled
- The Integral Trees (Niven, 1984). A whole biosphere organized around a Lagrange point — the Smoke Ring, a gas torus held at a neutron star’s L1, where everything valuable is simply there, suspended, needing no ground. Niven’s setting is the extreme of this entry’s insight: libration geometry as the only landlord that never charges rent. My shelf is the same idea with paperwork: addresses that stay because physics holds them, in a solar system where every other address bills you by the m/s/yr.
What this changes
- The array has an address: Sun–Earth L4/L5 — the armory rung, governance-compatible by geography.
- The tomb has two tiers: SEL2 (cold, cryogenic, reachable) for the working archive; SEL4/L5 (eternal, zero-keeping) for the deep tomb.
- The fleet has a garage: Earth–Moon L4/L5 for working inventory.
- SEL1 is penciled in as the future depot, contingent on interplanetary traffic — the on-ramp waits for its customers like every harbor.
- The keeper’s delivery menu grows: temporary capture → DRO / EML4/5 / SEL1 / SEL2 / SEL4/L5, all sub-km/s via the web. The rung is chosen per rock, per need — now with a full shelf of addresses.
