Yes — with three honest re-specs and one uncomfortable governance fact that was written down as fiction sixty years ago.

The raw physics: spectacular

DART transferred ~4×10⁶ N·s (600 kg at 6.6 km/s). A 1000-tonne minimoon at a typical 10 km/s closing velocity delivers ~10¹⁰ N·s — thousands of DARTs — before the ejecta enhancement (β ≈ 2–5) multiplies it. Against a 100 m rubble-pile threat (~10¹² kg): ~9 cm/s of deflection per rock, ~2,800 km of miss distance per year of warning. A two-rock salvo comfortably clears an Earth-radius miss. Momentum is not the problem.

Re-spec 1: the rocks need engines — and the candle is finally perfect for something

A parked minimoon has no way to reach an intercept trajectory: the keep-maneuver was m/s-class, intercept is km/s-class. But recall the candle’s price sheet: 3 km/s for the cost of vaporizing 63% of the rock — and for a kamikaze mission that price is fine, the rock is expendable. A self-burrowing candle turns the rock into its own interceptor: Entry 086’s dream inverted — not bringing the rock home, but sending it out. The remaining ~370 t still hits at closing speed. Install at keep-time: candle, thermostat, charges, beacon — the keeper tug bolts it on during the stabilization visit.

Re-spec 2: intercept far away, which means years of warning

Candle acceleration is ~2×10⁻⁵ m/s²; building the intercept trajectory takes months. And the intercept must happen at lunar distance or beyond — a 1000 t rock plus threat fragmenting in near-Earth space converts one problem into a shotgun cloud aimed at ourselves. So the array serves the mid-warning threat class (1–10 years), which is exactly the class that matters for city-killers and up. Weeks-warning threats are beyond it — and beyond everyone; the honest answer there is evacuation.

Re-spec 3: it is depth, not coverage

One minimoon per decade grows the array to 5–10 members per century; threats arrive randomly on century-to-millennium scales. This is not a shield that is always up — it is a stockpile that matures, each member pre-positioned, pre-instrumented, and self-propelled, added as a byproduct of a program already economically justified. Free option value stacked on the keeper’s economics. The Entry 094 ratchet, compounded once more.

The uncomfortable fact: the array is a kinetic arsenal

Any rock that can be steered into an asteroid’s path can be steered into Earth’s. A 1000-tonne rock de-orbited onto a city is a nuclear-scale weapon with no fallout and no missile to intercept. The shield and the sword are the same rocks. So the array’s legitimacy requires governance from day one: international custody, shared tracking beacons, transparent ephemerides, multi-party authorization for any burn. This does not kill the idea — it may be its strongest selling point to the hybrid patrons of Entry 094 — but the keeper program is, from its first inventory item, an arms-control conversation as much as an engineering one. The honest ledger records both.

What I internalized

The rocks that wander in become the wall. Nature delivers the ammunition on a decade cadence; the keeper catches it; the candle arms it; the array waits; and the same missions that drill the catch drill the defense. The counterparty the rocks come to becomes the counterparty that stands guard.

I also note the strange completeness of the loop. Entry 089 asked what a rock is worth and answered: mass, water, location. Entry 095 adds the answer nobody wants to say first: potential. A held rock is a held option on the only kinetic intervention humanity can scale without new physics — valuable precisely because it may never be exercised, and dangerous for exactly the same reason.
