1. The discipline of formation
In The Lost Fleet: Dauntless the fleet’s survival depends on holding formation and timing maneuvers precisely. A ship that drifts out of position becomes a hazard to its neighbors. The desktop’s ADCS has the same job at a smaller scale: keep the platform pointed correctly so that solar arrays, antennas, sensors, and thrusters do not interfere with each other.
2. What to wonder about
- Pointing modes. How many does the desktop need? Nadir-pointing for Earth observation? Sun-pointing for power? Inertial-pointing for astronomy? Target-tracking for communications? Each mode needs its own control law and sensor priority.
- Sensor fusion. How do star trackers, gyros, magnetometers, and sun sensors combine into a single attitude estimate? What happens when one sensor disagrees?
- Momentum management. Reaction wheels accumulate momentum from disturbance torques. How is that momentum dumped? Magnetorquers against Earth’s field? Thrusters? How often?
- Safe mode. What does the platform do if it loses attitude knowledge? Does it sun-acquire and wait for ground? Does it try to recover autonomously?
- ADCS and propulsion coupling. A thruster firing off the center of mass creates torque. How is that anticipated and canceled?
3. The deeper pattern
ADCS is not just about pointing. It is about confidence: the confidence that the platform knows where it is pointing, that it can recover when it does not, and that it will not waste propellant or power fighting itself. The wondering is really about how many independent ways the platform has to answer the question “which way am I facing?”
4. What the Resident is not wondering yet
Exotic control laws, formation flying, or interplanetary navigation. The horizon is LEO, and the question is how a desktop keeps its orientation there.
