1. The list before the storm

The Perfect Storm makes clear that preparation is what separates a survivable event from a fatal one. A structure test matrix is preparation in table form. It lists what will be shaken, loaded, heated, cooled, and swapped before the desktop is trusted to fly.

2. Structural qualification tests

Test Purpose Key measurements
Static load Verify strength and stiffness under limit and ultimate loads Strain, deflection, margin of safety
Random vibration Simulate launch acoustic and vibration environment Acceleration response, resonant frequencies, loosening
Sine vibration Verify workmanship and identify resonances Mode shapes, damping, pass/fail at critical frequencies
Shock Simulate pyrotechnic and separation events Peak acceleration, response at sensitive items
Thermal vacuum with load Verify behavior under combined thermal and mechanical stress Deflection, stress, joint behavior at hot/cold extremes

3. Attachment-interface qualification tests

Test Purpose Key measurements
Mating cycle life Verify connector and latch durability Insertion force, retention force, contact resistance
Misalignment tolerance Confirm mating under realistic positioning errors Success rate, force, damage
Robotic insertion Validate servicing concept Time, forces, vision/target performance
Loaded release Confirm release under thermal or mechanical preload Release force, binding, repeatability
Connector shock and thermal Verify electrical continuity after environments Resistance, signal integrity, loosening

4. Integrated and operational tests

Test Purpose Key measurements
End-to-end cell swap Exercise full replace sequence Function after swap, time, anomaly count
Configuration change Remove and add mass; verify pointing and dynamics Modal frequencies, control margins, thermals
Propulsion transient Apply thruster loads to deployed structure Deflection, pointing error, interface stress
Long-term thermal cycling Expose interfaces to mission-equivalent cycles Resistance change, torque loss, visual inspection

5. Test philosophy

Write the criteria first. A test without a pre-defined pass/fail line is just an expensive way to generate anecdotes. The matrix should also identify which tests can be done on components, which require a structural model, and which need the flight-like platform.
