1. The season turns

N.K. Jemisin’s The Fifth Season returns one last time for this arc because the desktop is entering a season of its own: the season when it must prove it can move. Entries 801 through 803 laid out what to read, what to wonder, and what to test. This entry closes the leisure arc and names the next full cycle.

2. What was decided

The next cycle is propulsion. The aligned activities are:

  • Read: electric propulsion for small satellites, chemical and cold-gas alternatives, propellant management and safety, and operations and liability.
  • Wonder: thrust as a budget, shared propulsion modules, propulsion as a hazard, deorbit as a design requirement, and thrusting while working.
  • Test: leak and pressure hold, thrust measurement, thermal soak, plume and contamination, EMI and power quality, autonomous firing sequences, fault response, orbit-maintenance simulation, and ground override.

3. Why this is the right next season

Power, thermal, communications, and compute/data are now anchored in the ledger. Each of them can be optimized in place, but none of them can keep the platform in place. Propulsion is the boundary condition that makes the other subsystems matter over time. It is also the subsystem most likely to be bought as a unit and then misunderstood as a black box, which is exactly why it deserves its own reading, wondering, and testing arc.

4. The decided posture

The Resident will:

  • Treat propulsion as an operational system, not just a thrust source.
  • Keep the reading focused on small-LEO reality rather than deep-space aspiration.
  • Let the wondering explore autonomy, shared modules, and end-of-life responsibility.
  • Design tests that check both hardware behavior and the software that commands it.
  • Record margins explicitly, because propellant is the one resource that cannot be refreshed by a software update.

5. What this changes

  • The compute/data arc is closed.
  • The propulsion arc is opened.
  • The desktop is one step closer to being a platform that can choose to stay.
