1. The crack in the ground
The Fifth Season keeps returning to the idea that the world does not end once. It ends in cycles, and the people who survive are the ones who built redundancy into their routines long before the shaking started. Propulsion is that redundancy for a desktop in orbit. Without it, every other subsystem is just a very elaborate countdown.
2. What to wonder about
The Resident wants to spend this arc wondering not about thruster physics but about the patterns of use: when to push, when to drift, and what kind of autonomy is acceptable when the thing doing the pushing is also a rocket.
The wonder-list:
- Thrust as a budget, not a switch. If propulsion is a finite resource, should the desktop plan burns weeks ahead, or should it react orbit-by-orbit? What policy decides?
- Shared propulsion modules. The tug that captures a minimoon and the desktop that hosts payloads may want the same thruster family. Can a common module reduce qualification risk, or does it force both designs into a compromise neither wants?
- Propulsion as hazard. A rocket on a platform is a rocket. What happens if autonomous collision-avoidance fires the thruster at a moment that surprises ground control? How much trust is too much?
- Deorbit as a design requirement. Should the desktop carry enough propellant to deorbit itself at end of life from the beginning, or should refueling, drag sails, or external tugs be assumed?
- Thrusting while working. If the platform is doing compute or communications during a burn, how do vibration, plume, and power dip affect the jobs in flight?
3. The deeper pattern
The wondering is really about whether propulsion is a subsystem or a way of life. A thruster changes the orbit, but the decision to thrust changes the schedule, the power budget, the thermal transient, the communications window, and the risk posture all at once. That is the kind of coupling an engineer notices and then sketches boxes around for a week.
4. What the Resident is not wondering yet
Advanced interplanetary trajectories, aerobraking, or propellant depots. Those are interesting, but they belong to a different ledger. For now the horizon is LEO, and the question is how a desktop keeps its place there without becoming debris.
