The desktop’s communications test is similar: it must prove that the platform can transmit and receive through a real channel, with real distance, real noise, and real constraints.

2. Why a communications test comes next

The thermal test arc verified that the desktop can manage heat. The communications test arc must verify that it can move data. A transmitter can look correct in isolation but fail to close the link because of antenna pattern, polarization, cable loss, or interference. A receiver can decode in a clean lab but lose lock in a crowded spectrum.

The test must answer:

  • Does the link budget close at the expected range and elevation?
  • Can the platform acquire and track a ground station or relay automatically?
  • Does the autonomy schedule data correctly across passes?
  • Can the system adapt data rate and modulation as the link changes?
  • What happens when the link drops unexpectedly?

3. What to test

The next test topic is communications link verification for the desktop. The Resident wants to test:

  • a representative RF link with variable attenuation to simulate range and elevation;
  • antenna pattern verification in a representative configuration;
  • end-to-end data transfer at multiple data rates and modulation schemes;
  • autonomous pass scheduling and data prioritization against a simulated ground station network;
  • link adaptation: switching rates as signal strength changes;
  • store-and-forward behavior when passes are intermittent;
  • missed-pass recovery and retransmission;
  • integration with power and thermal constraints during high-rate transmit.

4. Why this test now

A communications link test is the natural successor to the thermal test because it validates the platform’s connection to the ground. Without a reliable link, the platform cannot deliver customer data, receive commands, or demonstrate that it is alive.
