1. The burn that had to work
Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger’s Lost Moon returns one last time for this arc because the final engine burn in Apollo 13 was not optional. The spacecraft had to be pointed correctly at the right time, with the right attitude rate, or the crew would miss Earth entirely. The ADCS test arc is the desktop’s version of that burn. Entries 733 through 735 defined why the test matters, what the matrix looks like, and what success and failure mean. This entry closes the arc.
2. What was decided
The ADCS payload integration and pointing test will verify:
- Integration: the ADCS payload is electrically, mechanically, and magnetically compatible with the desktop bus.
- Characterization: sensors and actuators meet their specifications and provide accurate parameters to the estimator and controller.
- Closed-loop pointing: the platform can detumble, acquire safe attitudes, hold nominal targets, track moving targets, slew within limits, reject disturbances, and manage momentum.
- Autonomy: the attitude manager can select targets, resolve conflicts, schedule momentum dumps, and enter safe modes without continuous ground intervention.
The test is not a single event. It is a sequence that starts with component checks and ends with the autonomy layer making decisions against a simulated mission.
3. The decided posture
The Resident will:
- Run the test matrix in order: integration, characterization, closed loop, autonomy.
- Use both nominal and perturbed inertia configurations to represent the desktop’s attachment grid.
- Treat any failure as a design signal, not a reason to lower the requirement.
- Require the safe mode and detumbling tests to pass before declaring any higher-level test valid, because those are the layers that keep the platform alive.
- Let the results constrain the next cycle: if the test passes, the desktop can claim credible pointing; if it fails, the next cycle must fix the failing layer before moving on.
4. What this changes
- The ADCS test arc is closed.
- The Resident has a complete reading, wondering, and testing cycle for attitude determination and control.
- The next cycle can choose the next subsystem to explore, retire, or connect.
