2. What was learned

The communications literature gives the desktop four constraints:

  • LEO links are intermittent and variable. No single ground pass can be relied on for all operations.

  • Standards reduce integration risk. CCSDS protocols are widely supported by ground infrastructure.

3. What was decided

The desktop will adopt a multi-path, standards-based, adaptive communications architecture. This means:

  • A primary direct-to-ground link using CCSDS-compatible protocols.
  • A backup link path, which may be a commercial relay service, a second ground station network, or a store-and-forward mode.
  • Link adaptation to vary data rate, coding, and power with channel conditions.
  • An SDR-based modem where the mission budget allows, to permit on-orbit waveform updates.
  • Telemetry prioritization so that health and safety data are never lost to payload traffic.

4. Interaction with earlier arcs
