Vernor Vinge’s A Fire Upon the Deep returns one last time for this arc because the Tines’ reunion is possible but not trivial. The desktop’s conclusion is similarly cautious: rejoining will be architecturally possible, but it will not be exercised on the first platform.
Entries 537 through 539 wondered about autonomous rejoining and docking of split platform segments. This entry closes the arc.
2. What was decided
The desktop will be designed as rejoin-ready, not autonomously rejoining on first launch. This means:
- The split-ready segment boundaries from Entries 521 through 524 will be chosen so that a future capture mechanism can mate with them.
- Segment interfaces will include mechanical alignment features, power connectors, and data connectors that can be engaged automatically.
- The software federation will support state reconciliation, clock synchronization, and authority handover after a partition.
- The first operational mode will not perform autonomous rejoining, but it will not make design choices that prevent it.
- Safety rules, approach corridors, and manual overrides will be defined before any rejoining is attempted.
3. Why this is the right posture
Full autonomous rejoining on day one would add RPOD sensors, propulsion, mechanisms, and safety software before the basic platform is proven. Ignoring it entirely would make splitting a one-way capability. Rejoin-ready preserves optionality and makes splitting a reusable operational mode in the future.
4. What this implies for the architecture
The platform must be more than a rack that can break apart. It needs:
- Segment designs that can function as both chaser and target in a rendezvous.
- A common docking or berthing interface across segments.
- Federation protocols that handle long partitions and safe reintegration.
- Operations procedures that treat rejoining as a hazardous proximity operation.
5. Relationship to earlier arcs
The autonomous rejoining arc connects to the platform-splitting arc, the rendezvous reading arc from Entries 533 through 536, and the network reconfiguration and storage healing arcs. A rejoining segment must navigate, capture, and reconcile — each of which builds on earlier decisions.
6. What comes next
The next arc is the platform segment split and degraded-mode operations test. The rejoining decisions will feed into that test by setting requirements for segment autonomy and partition-tolerant federation behavior.
