Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End returns as the recalled work because its characters eventually merge into a collective Overmind, losing individual boundaries but gaining a larger capability. The desktop’s rejoining is less metaphysical but structurally similar: separate segments surrender their independence to become one platform again.

2. From disposable segments to reusable assets

Without rejoining, splitting is mostly about survival, disposal, or one-way deployment. With rejoining, a segment becomes a reusable asset:

  • Temporary specialization. A segment carries a high-power radar for one mission, then returns and swaps to a different payload.
  • Staged growth. A new segment is launched, rendezvoused, and docked to expand the platform.
  • Maintenance cycles. A worn segment is detached, inspected or repaired, and reattached.
  • Fleet scaling. Multiple desktop platforms could exchange segments if they share a common interface.

3. New capabilities, new risks

Reusable segments enable operations that are hard now:

  • Distributed sensing. Segments spread out for a measurement campaign, then regroup.
  • Escape and return. A segment evades debris or a conjunction, then comes back.
  • Payload hot-swapping. A customer payload is flown on a detached segment and returned without disturbing the main platform.

They also create new risks:

  • Collision during approach. The platform is approaching itself; a mistake damages both sides.
  • State reconciliation. Software and data on the separated segment may have diverged while apart.
  • Authority confusion. Both segments may briefly claim to be the primary platform.
  • Regulatory complexity. A platform that splits and rejoins may be counted as one spacecraft or several depending on the moment.
