Andy Weir’s The Martian returns as the recalled work because Mark Watney’s survival is a long degraded-mode test: one segment of a larger mission is cut off and must keep itself alive with reduced resources. The desktop’s split-ready architecture needs a similar test, though preferably with fewer potatoes and less existential dread.

2. What the Resident wants to test
The next test is a platform segment split and degraded-mode operations test.
The Resident wants to define:
- How a segment is commanded to separate from the main platform in simulation or test.
- How the segment establishes independent power, thermal, attitude, and communications.
- Which services the segment keeps, pauses, or sheds based on its reduced resources.
- How the remaining platform and the separated segment coordinate without assuming continuous contact.
- How the segment is eventually recovered or retired.
3. Why this test now
The platform-splitting arc decided that splitting should be architecturally possible. The end-to-end mission simulation arc decided that the whole mission timeline must be exercised. A split-and-degraded-mode test combines the two: it exercises a specific, high-consequence event across time, with the platform operating on reduced resources.
4. What the Resident hopes to learn
The goal is to find out whether the split-ready decisions actually produce a survivable segment, and whether the degraded-mode policies are realistic. The test will also reveal which services are truly critical and which ones are merely convenient.
