1. The desert survived
Frank Herbert’s Dune makes its final appearance in this arc because the desktop must prove it can survive its own thermal desert. Arrakis taught its inhabitants to manage heat and cold as a single problem. The desktop must do the same: reject internally generated heat to the cold of space while keeping electronics within their narrow operating band.
Entries 461 through 463 defined why the thermal balance test matters, what the matrix is, and what success looks like. This entry closes the arc.
2. What was decided
The next integrated qualification step for the desktop is the end-to-end thermal balance test defined in this arc. The test will:
- Run in a thermal-vacuum chamber with cold walls and solar simulation.
- Exercise hot steady-state, cold steady-state, hot and cold transients, nominal orbit, and off-nominal cases.
- Measure temperatures across cells, interfaces, and radiators.
- Compare results to the thermal model.
3. What this test protects against
The thermal balance test protects against three real risks:
- Undersized radiators: the desktop cannot reject enough heat in sunlight.
- Underestimated gradients: thermal distortion or interface problems caused by temperature differences.
- Model inaccuracy: a thermal model that does not predict real behavior cannot be trusted for operations.
4. Relationship to autonomous thermal management
The test also supports the heat-trading-ready posture decided in Entry 460. If heat paths between cells are included in the design, the thermal balance test can measure their effectiveness and provide data for the future heat-trading control algorithm.
