Arrakis receives too much external heat; the desktop generates too much internal heat. Both must manage the balance. A thermal balance test is the way to prove that the desktop’s heat budget closes: generation equals rejection, and no cell exceeds its limits.

2. What thermal balance means
Thermal balance means that over an orbit, the heat entering each cell equals the heat leaving it. Heat enters from:
- Internal electronics dissipation.
- Solar absorption on external surfaces.
- Earth infrared emission.
- Heat conducted or radiated from neighboring cells.
Heat leaves through:
- Radiation to space from radiators and external surfaces.
- Conduction to colder parts of the structure.
- Stored thermal mass absorbing transient swings.
If the balance is wrong, temperatures drift out of specification.
3. Why this test follows power distribution
The power distribution test proved that the electrical system can share and protect power. The thermal balance test asks whether the heat generated by that power can be rejected. A compute cell that draws 100 W also dissipates close to 100 W as heat. The bus may deliver the power perfectly, but if the heat cannot escape, the cell overheats.
4. What this test must cover
The thermal balance test must exercise:
- A representative orbit thermal environment, including eclipse and sunlight.
- Internal dissipation from each cell at realistic duty cycles.
- Solar heating on external surfaces.
- Inter-cell conduction and radiation.
- Steady-state and transient temperature behavior.
