1. The flight where power became the problem, solved on the ground
Jim Lovell’s Apollo 13 makes its final appearance in this arc because the desktop’s power problems should be solved before launch, not improvised in orbit. The astronauts had to manage scarce power manually because they had no other choice. The desktop can be designed so that many of those decisions are made automatically, tested on the ground, and verified before the first cell is swapped.
Entries 445 through 447 defined why the power distribution test matters, what the matrix is, and what success looks like. This entry closes the arc.
2. What was decided
The next electrical qualification step for the desktop is the power distribution test defined in this arc. The test will:
- Use at least three representative cells on a common bus.
- Exercise normal operation, load steps, eclipse simulation, cell disconnect/reconnect, overcurrent, undervoltage, and thermal limits.
- Require bus voltage stability, fault isolation within limits, critical-load survival, and accurate telemetry.
3. What this test protects against
The power distribution test protects against three real risks:
- Bus collapse from a single fault: one failing cell pulling the whole platform down.
- Slow fault response: a fault that propagates before it is contained.
- Unpredictable load shedding: critical loads losing power while non-critical loads remain on.
4. Relationship to dynamic power trading
The test also supports the power-trading-ready posture decided in Entry 444. Dynamic trading requires the same underlying capabilities: per-cell switching, metering, current limits, and priority rules. The power distribution test proves that those capabilities work in a controlled setting before they are trusted with autonomous decisions.
