1. The foundation that managed scarcity across time

Isaac Asimov’s Foundation returns as the recalled work because the desktop has a similar problem: it must manage a scarce resource across an uncertain future. In Asimov’s story the resource is political and economic capital. For the desktop the resource is power. Some cells generate more than they need; others need more than they generate. The question is whether the desktop can move power between cells the way a foundation moves resources between crises.

2. The current assumption

So far the desktop has been imagined with a power bus and batteries sized for the aggregate load. Each cell draws what it needs from a common bus. If one cell has excess solar generation, that excess is available to the bus. If one cell is in shadow, it draws from the bus. The allocation is implicit: the bus is a shared pool.

Dynamic power trading makes the allocation explicit. Cells announce their surplus or deficit. The federation decides who gets priority. A cell with a failing battery might borrow from a neighbor. A cell running a high-priority compute job might draw more than its nominal share.

3. What changes

Dynamic power trading would change several things:

  • Failure becomes a budget problem. A degraded power cell does not automatically mean mission failure if other cells can cover it.
  • The desktop can run closer to the edge. Instead of sizing every cell for its own worst case, the federation shares aggregate margin.
  • Operations become more complex. Ground must track not just bus voltage but per-cell generation, load, and debt.
  • New failure modes appear. A cell that borrows too much, or refuses to lend, can destabilize the bus.

4. Why this is worth wondering about now

The desktop does not need dynamic power trading on day one. But the electrical architecture chosen now will either enable it or forbid it. A rigid bus with fixed current limits cannot trade. A bus with per-cell switches, meters, and a control protocol can trade as soon as the software is ready.
