Tom Wolfe’s The Right Stuff returns because the desktop’s ride to orbit will be no gentler than the Mercury capsules. The launch vehicle does not care what is inside the fairing. It shakes everything with broadband random vibration, hits it with pyrotechnic shock at stage separation, and snaps it with deployment loads. A design that is elegant in orbit is useless if it breaks on the way up.

2. What launch does to a rack

A rack of cells is a stack of masses, springs, and interfaces. Vibration excites resonances in the structure. Shock sends stress waves through bolted joints. The failures that result are often not obvious from static analysis:

  • A cell can shift in its rails until a connector is pulled.
  • A bolt can loosen until a bracket rattles.
  • A cable can fatigue where it exits a grommet.
  • A stiff cell can load a flexible rail beyond its limit.
  • A resonance can amplify local acceleration far above the input level.

3. Why this test follows thermal-vacuum

The thermal-vacuum test proved the interface under space-like temperature and vacuum. The vibration and shock test asks whether the same assembly survives the mechanical loads of launch. If the interface is robust but the structure breaks, the platform never reaches orbit. If the structure survives but the interface degrades, the platform arrives broken.

The vibration and shock test must exercise:

  • Random vibration on each axis at qualification levels.
  • Pyrotechnic or mechanical shock at the mounting points.
  • Visual inspection and functional test before, during, and after the campaign.
  • Specific attention to the attachment interface, connector retention, and cable routing.
