1. Exploring the unknown with instruments

Arthur C. Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama sends explorers into an alien cylinder where nothing is familiar. They survive by moving carefully, measuring everything, and retreating when the environment does not match their assumptions. A good test has the same posture: define success before entering, instrument the path, and know when to stop.

This entry defines success and failure for the off-nominal alignment test.

2. Minimum success

The interface passes the off-nominal alignment test if, for every case in the matrix, the cell:

  • Seats fully without jamming.
  • Makes reliable electrical contact at all connector pins.
  • Makes reliable thermal contact across the thermal interface.
  • Does not suffer visible damage to guide features, connectors, or surfaces.
  • Can be extracted without excessive force or damage.

This is the minimum. It says the interface is tolerant enough to survive the expected range of misalignment.

3. Full success

A stronger result would add:

  • Insertion force remains within the actuator’s design limit even in the worst reasonable case.
  • Electrical and thermal performance after misaligned insertion is within specification.
  • Repeated misaligned insertions do not measurably degrade the interface.
  • The test article survives a full qualification cycle of nominal and off-nominal insertions without rework.

This stronger result supports the claim that the interface is not just tolerant but robust.

4. Failure modes

The test fails if any of the following occur:

  • The cell jams and cannot be inserted to full depth.
  • A connector pin bends, shorts, or fails to make contact.
  • The guide feature galls or cracks.
  • The thermal interface is damaged or fails to make contact.
  • Insertion force exceeds the actuator limit.
  • The cell seats but does not make reliable electrical or thermal contact.

Each failure mode points to a different design fix: larger guide chamfers, more compliant connectors, softer alignment features, or a different insertion strategy.

5. What this changes

  • The test has clear pass and fail criteria.
  • The criteria separate functional success from robustness.
