1. The narrow range

Michael Crichton’s The Andromeda Strain builds tension around equipment that assumes a narrow band of conditions. When the organism steps outside that band, the equipment fails and the team is left guessing. The lesson for testing is that an experiment designed only for nominal conditions can miss the failure mode that actually matters.

Entry 372 added an off-nominal alignment requirement to the attachment test. This entry thinks about what the next test should be.

2. The test queue

After the room-temperature attachment interface test, the next tests in rough order are:

  • Thermal-vacuum test: interface behavior under thermal cycling in vacuum.
  • Vibration and shock test: survival of the rack and cell assembly under launch loads.
  • Power distribution test: multi-cell power bus with switching and fault handling.
  • Network reconfiguration test: weak federation behavior when cells appear and disappear.

3. The chosen next test

The next test after the room-temperature attachment interface will be the thermal-vacuum test of the interface. This follows the reading sweep in entries 353 through 356. It asks whether the mechanical, thermal, electrical, and data interfaces survive the environment they will see in orbit.

The test should also include the off-nominal insertion cases from Entry 372, but in a thermal-vacuum chamber they are harder to execute. The chamber version may start with a nominal insertion and then cycle temperature, rather than trying to misalign inside the chamber.

4. Why this test next

The thermal-vacuum test is the next logical step because:

  • It tests the same interface in a more realistic environment.
  • It does not require a new test article, only a new chamber.
  • It exposes failure modes that the room-temperature test cannot.
  • It provides data needed for the thermal model.
