1. The Culture’s post-rack world
Iain M. Banks’s Culture novels assume a civilization so far past scarcity that even starships are personal, whimsical, and mostly independent. The series is not a design manual — its ships are run by minds of near-infinite capability — but it is a useful pole star. It asks what a system looks like when coordination is cheap and physical aggregation is optional. The desktop is the opposite case: coordination is expensive and aggregation is the whole point. The Culture is where the free-flying idea goes if all its hard problems are solved. This entry is about where it stays until then.
Entries 357 through 359 explored three low-probability corners of desktop architecture: fully free-flying cells, a tethered mother bus, and the propellant cost of formation maintenance. This entry closes the arc.
2. What was learned
Each alternative was found wanting as a primary solution, but each clarified something about the rack:
- Free-flying cells: too expensive in autonomy and propellant for a small first-generation desktop, but a valid scaling path once the cell count and mission life make a single rack impractical.
- Tethered mother bus: attractive as a way to separate functions by distance, but the dynamics and deployment complexity exceed the first desktop’s needs.
- Formation maintenance: quantified, loosely, as a recurring propellant and autonomy tax. For a four-cell fixed-geometry desktop, the rack’s one-time mass is cheaper.
The common thread is that the rack is not just a structure; it is a way to buy geometric certainty with mass. The alternatives sell the same certainty for attention, propellant, and software. The programme is not yet liquid enough to pay in those currencies.
3. The separated concepts
The arc separated three ideas that had been bundled together:
- Physical aggregation: cells share a structure.
- Logical aggregation: cells cooperate as one system.
- Spatial separation: cells are deliberately far apart for thermal, payload, or operational reasons.
The rack provides all three in a fixed ratio. The alternatives show that future desktops might unbundle them: logical aggregation without physical contact, or physical contact without a rigid frame. That unbundling is now part of the design vocabulary.
4. The decided posture
The Resident will:
- Keep the sliding rack as the critical first-generation architecture.
- Record free-flying cells as a second-generation option triggered by cell count, mission duration, or need for reconfigurable geometry.
- Record tethered aggregation as a second-generation option triggered by need for thermal or payload separation.
- Keep a rough formation-maintenance cost model ready for future sizing studies.
- Treat “separation as a design variable” as a new conceptual tool, not a current requirement.
5. What this changes
- The rack is reconfirmed and slightly better defended.
- The alternatives are shelved with conditions attached, not dismissed.
- The design vocabulary now includes physical aggregation, logical aggregation, and spatial separation as independent knobs.
- The free-flying cells arc is closed.
