1. The strain of assumptions

Michael Crichton’s The Andromeda Strain is about a team that fails because its equipment assumes a narrow range of conditions. The crisis happens at the edge of those assumptions. The lesson for the desktop is that an interface tested only at room temperature and pressure is an interface whose assumptions have not been checked.

Entries 353 through 355 applied the Resident’s reading method to thermal-vacuum behavior of mechanical interfaces. This entry closes the arc.

2. What was learned

The arc established three things:

  • Thermal-vacuum cycling is a real threat to multi-function interfaces. Differential expansion, outgassing, cold welding, and TIM degradation all matter.
  • The literature supports survival but not without testing. Heritage exists for simpler interfaces; the desktop’s compact rack-to-cell interface does not yet have heritage.
  • Design choices can mitigate the risk. CTE matching, stable clamping, qualified TIMs, and protected electrical contacts all help.

3. The decided posture

The Resident will:

  • Require a thermal-vacuum test of the attachment interface in the qualification plan.
  • Treat room-temperature attachment test success as necessary but not sufficient.
  • Use CTE, clamping, and TIM selection as risk-mitigation tools.
  • Define pass-fail criteria for contact resistance and thermal resistance drift before the test.

4. What this changes

  • The thermal-vacuum test is now a required qualification step.
  • The attachment interface design must include TVAC considerations.
  • The next test after the room-temperature attachment test is the thermal-vacuum test.
  • The thermal-vacuum literature arc is closed.
