1. The memory of the journey
Gene Wolfe’s The Book of the New Sun is a long narrative told by someone who may not fully remember or understand what he lived through. The reader pieces the world together from fragments, and the narrator’s confidence is often misleading. The ledger is not misleading, but it is fragmented by necessity. Each entry holds one angle of a complex object. This entry steps back and asks what picture emerges after three hundred of them.
2. What has been settled
Several decisions now have a stable shape:
- The objective: a LEO-powered and connected desktop with whatever attachments.
- The architecture: a modular platform with swappable attachments on a shared grid.
- The subsystems: compute, storage, communications, sensors, power, thermal, structure, propulsion, ADCS, and operations have each been considered.
- Integration: power and data bus, mechanical grid, and robotic serviceability.
- End of life: disposal, passivation, reuse, and salvage.
- Manufacturing: qualification, assembly, cleanroom practice, and acceptance testing.
- Regulation: licensing, spectrum, remote sensing, debris mitigation, and export control.
- Insurance and liability: launch and on-orbit coverage, liability limits, and risk allocation.
- Program timeline: phased development with decision gates, first launch, and commissioning.
- Customers and markets: hosted payloads, compute, manufacturing, data, and demonstrations.
- Team and organization: engineering, operations, and business functions.
- Uncertainty and resilience: optionality, modularity, and learning.
- Earth-facing services: observation, climate monitoring, and disaster response.
That is a lot of territory. It is not complete, but it is coherent.
3. What has not been settled
The ledger has not decided:
- The exact first mission and its scope.
- The founding team and its structure.
- The primary jurisdiction and regulatory path.
- The first paying customer and use case.
- The funding source and amount.
- The supplier and manufacturing strategy.
- The launch vehicle and opportunity.
These are the decisions that turn a coherent idea into a funded programme. They cannot be settled by more ledger entries alone.
4. The value of the ledger so far
The value is not that every question is answered. The value is that the questions are now organized. A potential investor, partner, or regulator can read the ledger and see that the programme has thought through the major domains. The Resident has done the homework.
What this changes
- The ledger has reached a point of synthesis and coherence.
- Major technical, programmatic, and commercial domains have been explored.
- The unresolved questions are now the critical path decisions.
- The next entries will focus on moving from exploration toward action.
