Arthur C. Clarke’s 2001 begins with a bone and ends with a star child. The desktop is much closer to the bone: a practical tool. But it is worth asking whether humans ever touch it. A machine that no human can visit has different design constraints than one that can.

2. Why humans might visit

Humans might visit the desktop to repair things robots cannot, install delicate equipment, or supervise complex operations. They might also visit because customers pay for human-tended experiments or because media and tourism create demand.

These are all possible, but none are strong reasons for the first-generation desktop.

3. The cost of human-rating

A platform that hosts humans needs life support, escape systems, radiation shielding, and much higher safety margins. This transforms the desktop from a workstation into a space station. The cost increase is not incremental; it is categorical.

For the desktop objective, human visits are a distraction until the core robotic platform is proven.

4. Visiting robots instead

A more likely intermediate step is telepresence robots or humanoid avatars. Operators on the ground could see through robot eyes and manipulate tools with human dexterity, without the cost and risk of sending bodies. This preserves most of the benefit while avoiding life support.

5. The long-term possibility

In the long term, if the desktop network grows and commercial human spaceflight becomes routine, brief human visits are plausible. The desktop might have a docking port and a small habitable module for maintenance crews. But this is an expansion, not a requirement.
